Who We Are

Our Story

Before It Had a Name

Dumbbells & Discipleship started long before the idea was ever spoken out loud. In God's way, it started before any of us were born.

What you see now came to life through the intersection of two men — a men's ministry leader who knew something was missing, and a personal trainer who had just lost everything and found God in the wreckage. Their friendship didn't just produce a workout group. It produced a brotherhood.

Early Saturday mornings. An open Bible. A barbell. Honest men doing the work together — spiritually, physically, relationally. No polish. No performance.

"As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another."
Proverbs 27:17

Two Men. One Mission.

Tré Brown

Trevon "Tré" Brown

Most people know him as Tré. He's 25, a certified personal trainer, and the founder of Legacy Training Center in Connecticut — but none of that is where his story starts.

Growing up in North Carolina and Atlanta, Tré struggled with his health and self-image. Food became his comfort, video games his escape. He became overweight, insecure, and unhappy — the kid who hid behind humor because it hurt less than the truth. On August 21, 2019, he reached his breaking point and decided he couldn't keep living that way.

Within four months he lost over 30 pounds. More importantly, he discovered something he hadn't felt before: the ability to change. That revelation sparked a calling. He became a certified personal trainer, eventually a professional natural bodybuilder at 21, and built a growing client base.

"From the outside, life looked like everything I had worked for. But inside, something was missing."

A client named Hyeyoung invited him to Fellowship Church. His faith began to grow — slowly, honestly. But he was still holding on to control.

Then in September 2024, six weeks before his biggest professional show, his mentor Bob — boss, father figure, second home — was killed in a bicycle accident. In a single moment, Tré lost his mentor, his job, and his gym. That night, alone and overwhelmed, he stopped trying to control everything and chose to trust God instead.

God wasn't absent in his pain. He was present in it.

Months later, Tré and his coworker Katie stepped out in faith and opened Legacy Training Center, continuing Bob's legacy of transforming lives through fitness. He joined Anthony's Tuesday night men's Bible study, and for the first time saw what real biblical brotherhood looked like. The two passions God had always placed in him — fitness and faith — finally came together.

That's where Dumbbells & Discipleship was born.

Anthony

Anthony had been leading a men's ministry group for years. He loved it — the conversations, the brotherhood, helping men find Christ and rediscover joy. But something wasn't lining up.

"I was encouraging men to make changes in their lives when I wasn't making changes in my own."

He was overweight, out of shape, and if he was honest, lacking the confidence that matched the message he was carrying. Ministry was real. The calling was real. But he knew he couldn't keep standing at the front of the room without walking the road himself.

When Tré joined the men's group, his energy was immediate and contagious. They became friends quickly. Anthony started training with him at Legacy — and those sessions became something unexpected: some of the most physically demanding and spiritually honest conversations he'd ever had.

He's still on the journey. That's the point. D&D isn't built by men who have arrived. It's built by men who are still walking.

From those training sessions, from those conversations, from a friendship that pushed both men further than either expected — Dumbbells & Discipleship took shape. An early morning Bible study followed by an intense workout. Men stretching their faith and immediately denying their flesh. Building a brotherhood that gets vulnerable, sweats together, and lifts each other up.

Every step taken to honor God. Every man they can reach, brought along for the journey.

Not a Program.
Not a Class.
A Brotherhood.

01 / Open the Word

Every Saturday begins with scripture. A short devotional to anchor the session in something bigger than sets and reps. We bring our questions, our doubts, and our faith — and we go deeper together.

02 / Train Hard

Then we train. Full effort, no excuses. We push our bodies because discipline in the gym teaches discipline everywhere else. The flesh wants comfort. We deny it — together.

03 / Walk Worthy

Men who show up here don't just get stronger physically. They become better husbands, fathers, sons, brothers, and leaders — because they're becoming more like Christ. That's the whole point.

"For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come."
